According to experts, it is believed that a few 40% silver planchets produced at the San Francisco Mint and intended to be used to strike Eisenhower Dollars in San Francisco, were accidentally shipped to the Denver Mint. With only two known, these Bicentennial errors are far more valuable than the group of nearly fifty 1974-D and 1977-D 40% silver Eisenhower dollars known. And the finest-known of these two 1976-D examples (the coin offered here) is graded in near-gem MS64 by PCGS.

Despite there being nearly (50) estimated 1974-D and 1977-D error silver dollars, two sold at Heritage Auctions in 2022 and 2023 for as high as $26,400 each. And both of those examples were only graded MS62 and MS63 respectively! This appears to signify a maturing market where collectors are developing an appreciation for the true Eisenhower Dollar rarities -- rarities which have mostly remained vastly undervalued until recently, as record prices suggest a more sophisticated and evolving market.

The present coin is conservatively graded PCGS-MS64 with the proper weight for the silver error recorded on its insert by PCGS (374 grams). The only other example of this error ever discovered is graded a full (9) points lower in the circulated grade of PCGS-AU55, making this the only uncirculated example known to exist.
